A “VIP” is in Town

Last evening while I was ironing the clothing around 8pm, the home phone rang. From the caller id, it is a local mobile number, so I picked it up.

“Hello, astee…this is Shirley….” I was taken by real surprised but was very happy to hear her voice.

Shirley flew in from the USA on Monday and she said she will be leaving in a few days time, she asked to come and visit us. Of course, I welcome her with open arms.

Shirley is a closed family friend; actually she would have been my 3rd sister in law. She is actually the girlfriend of my 3rd brother aka San-ge. I remembered that when I still schooling, my 3rd brother was dating her. They were almost in discussion of marriage….but sad to say….San-ge left us suddenly without any warning. Shirley was in the USA when he passed away. As I was young at that time, I didn’t know who relayed the news to her…I think probably it’s one of San-ge’s buddy.

She was heart-broken…..for a very long time. Each time when I had chance to be online MSN with her, she always talk about San-ge and I know she really Love
San-ge very much.

Even after San-ge passed away, we still keep in touch. I felt that she is part of our family, even though they did not tie up anything officially.

For many years, whenever she is in SG for work or leisure, she will call me and I will make sure that we meet up. So last night was no exception, she came by to our home. She brought along a friend and through our conversation, she said she just started dating him after 10 years of trying to heal the heart-break. We chatted till almost mid-night and time seem to pass so fast.

I am happy for her and I know she deserved someone to look after her. I hope this new happiness that she finds will last her forever & ever.

We are OKAY!!

On Saturday morning, Adrian brought the 2 A's junior to the doctor to get the letter to certify that they are ok and i am so happy when i saw the 2 letters.

Finally, our 1 week of ordeal is over....we managed to get through it without external help from my parents. So it was really quite an amazing week.

My parents in law aka ye-ye and nai nai were very concerned of the 2 A's when they heard that they had HFMD. On Monday night, nai nai bought a can of glucose and 2 pint of Ben & Jerry Ice-cream for the children, in case they can't eat because of mouth ulcers. Ye ye also brought them coloring pencils and books to keep them occupied, if they get bored.

On Saturday evening, we went out dinner with my parent in laws and Terence. As Adrian was busied with the Parade training, he did not join us for dinner.

During dinner, there were so much information shared and i was so happy to hear of all the new updates. Well, if some of it comes through, Aces family will be able to fulfill another of our Dream.

After dinner, Yeye and nai nai brought them to Kiddy Palace and bought them each a toy. Anthea chosed Courtney and Anders chosed a Ultraman Dyna. They are always doting on their grandchildren.

Tag: 7 Random Things About Myself

I've been tagged by LZmommy on this topic. I will give it a go..

1. My most memorable trip is my Honeymoon to Europe (Switzerland, Paris & London) in June 2000. We had a Top Class tour leader and he made the trip most unforgettable.

2. I Love my dad's home-baked chicken pie the best.

3. I hate cockroaches.

4. I love baking cake / cookies. (Bad news is my oven seem to be out of order - always burnt my bakings.)

5. I would love to bring my children to go for oversea trips. So far, we had gone to KL as a family & with Anthea to Hong Kong.

6. Now, i can't afford to be sick because i am the 'pillar' of the house. So i will try my best to be strong & healthy. Eat well and rest well.

7. I Love my family and i know without them, there is no colors in my life.

Now that i have done this, i know the next part will be difficult as my link of blogging mummies/daddies are limited... : P

Let see what the following say of themselves:

Tag: The meaning of Anthea and Anders's Names

I'm tagged by Jean on the meaning of our children names.

Well, this will be an easier tag for me to start with. So here it goes and for record, as this is my 1st attempt to a tag, should there be an unforeseen 'mistake', please excuse me... : P

When Adrian and myself started to chose our children names, the options are quite simple:

1. It must start with an A
2. It must be at least 2 syllabus names, adrian find that it is hard to call a single syllabus name.

So with these 2 options in mind, we started to look around bookshop for Baby namers reference books.

ANTHEA Tan I-Yu (陈艾妤) : Anthea - a 3-syllable girl's name of Greek origin, means: Flower.

Anthea's due date was in the month of April which symbolised spring when Flowers bloom. Also being a girl, we hope that she will be Blessed with good natures and inner beauty.

When i chanced upon this name, i knew it was a perfect match.

ANDERS Tan Yong Xue (陈勇学): Anders - a 2-syllable unisex name of Greek/Germanic origin, means: Manly; strong.

For Anders, when i was about 6 weeks expecting him, my gynae told me that i may had a miscarriage. I was totally devasted. I went for a 2nd opinion and thankfully, we saw his heartbeat. From then onward, everything went on smoothly.

When we saw the meaning of Anders, we knew it was meant for him because Adrian said he was a warrior and fight to survive.

As for both their chinese names are given by a Feng Shui master according to their 生辰八字 .

As parents, we want them to have a good name that can bring out their character and of course, a good life ahead.

Confusion says: "if names be not correct, language accords not with truth."

For the fun of it, I’m going to tag Louis & Eve, Eileen,Nellie , Joyce & PM.

I would like to know the meaning of your child and do it only when you have the time. No problem if you do not want to this is of no obligation .

My "Spoke-woman"...

Yesterday I was home with the children. In the morning, I did the usual household chores of sweeping and mopping the floor.

When Anthea saw me mopping, she said “mommy, I help you to mop.” I was quite surprised and happy by her request. I kindly rejected her help and explaining to her that she can help me when she is older.

After fallen sick for a few days, I know, an extra pair of hand will definitely be useful. Also for her own good, I want to train her to be more domestically inclined.

In the evening, when we were having dinner, she suddenly asked her father: “Papa, why you never help mommy to mop the floor? “

Daddy replied: “because I go and work and blah….blah… “

Anthea asked “then Sunday leh…always badminton…why don’t help mommy”

Wow…. I was speechless!!!! She is my official “Spoke-woman” and voices my grievances.

So far, I do not ask Adrian to sweep, mop, and iron etcs. The main reason is I want him to do it out of his own willingness and not be bugged by a nagging wife. I know he will end up telling me: “dear, why don’t we consider a maid? “

Anthea seem to be more aware of situation around us now, so I believe that’s why she asked her daddy this question. Although I did not get a satisfactory answer, I am glad my little girl understands what mommy is doing.

Another positive sign to indicate that Anthea is growing and maturing.

Plagued by “Viruses”!!

We have been “invaded”…. : (

On Saturday, I was hit by unknown food poisoning. I suffered very bad diarrhea and vomiting. For Saturday and Sunday, I am totally down and out. This meant that there is whole lot of backlog of household chores.

On Sunday, I noticed that there are some blisters on Anders hands and I was worried that he may have contacted HFMD as the childcare has a few cases. Well, when you child is in childcare, you are open to all kind of viruses.

On Monday morning, the GP confirmed that Anders has HFMD and he is given 1 week of MC. During the same evening, Anthea came home and I saw spots on her hand. Well, we took no chance and Adrian brought her to the clinic and GP confirmed it is HFMD and she is given one week MC also.

OMG!!! “Good things” come in double deals…: (

So for this week, Adrian and myself will need to take alternate day leaves to look after them, as this can passed on to adults as well but likelihood is not high. I dare not ask my mum to help me.

This is a trying week for our family and Adrian said we will make it through day by day.

I am hanging in there, by strong will. But honestly, physically, I am exhausted and I hope that this week will pass fast and all will be well again.

"I have a Watch & we Love Kids Channels"

Anthea has been bugging us to get her a watch since last week. One of her classmate wears watch to school, so she also likes to have one.

I kept asking her “do you really know how to read the time?” “YES.” She said and to prove to us, she has been reading the time from our home wall clock and so far, she has been pretty accurate with the time. At time a little confused when the short hand is in between the hour.

We have not time to really look around for a watch yet, but I have the intention to go City chain to source for one, as a final resort, since it has wide varieties of watches.

Luck was on my side, yesterday during lunchtime, I came across this watch stall in the market place. The stall has so many different types of children watches, so choosing one was not an easy task. Finally, i bought one pink color watch for her.

In the evening, when I reached home and gave Anthea the watch, she was very happy and kept asking me where I bought it from. After that, she asked her daddy to help her to put it on. Then after, she becomes our home Time-keeper. She kept reading the time and the most amusing part is – she slept wearing her new watch…:)

Glad that she likes her little new toy and hope that with this, her skill on timekeeping will improve.

We have another new TOY in the ACES family - Starhub Cable TV - KID CHANNELS (Disney Channel, Nickelodeon channel & Cartoon network). We decided to trade in the World news group to this Kid group mainly because of the change in our lifestyle.

So far, Anthea and Anders are enjoying the Disney channel pretty much, especially during dinner time because Mr. Bean (animated) is on from 6.30pm to 7.00 pm (Mondays to Fridays). This make feeding Anders much easy since he is able to sit down and watch the show.

Also on Nickelodeon, they have educational kid shows like Blue Clues, Dora the Explorer, Hi – 5 etcs. So it is quite a treat for the children.

Well, our lifestyle has certainly changed a bit after siti returned to Indonesia. So, we are adjusting day by day to make logistics work more smoothly.

Food Galore..

After 2 weeks of “home quarantined” because of Code Red. The Tan family finally meets altogether over this weekend for Food GALORE.

On Saturday night, dinner was at Sze Chuan Court at Swissotel the Stamford. Food ordered – Scallop soup, French Beans fried the Sze Chuan way, Cod Fish (per person), fried Seafood “mian sian” and last but not least the time-honoured favourite, Szechuan Smoked Duck with Camphor Wood and Tea Leaves. We had red wine with dinner as Mother-in-law has some hotel vouchers as she bought the membership. What a treat and we really enjoyed the dinner.

Adrian missed this dinner as he had his own group dinner with his colleagues at the renowned Uncle Leong Crab in Ang Mo Kio. Heard he said that his colleagues preferred Mellben to Uncle Leong. He was planning to book Mellben but they don’t allow RSVP for weekends so they have to settle for Uncle Leong. They were a group of 13 guys.

On Sunday night, we officially celebrated Mother’s Day dinner at 716 since all of us were available. What can be better than HOME-COOKED meal on such occasion? I dread to eat out on Mother’s day, mainly is most restaurants will be packed and also the prices of food will be jetted up. Since all the family members are agreeable to the idea.

I believed that our decision was WISE…hee : P

Louis was very kind to go Tekka market to buy beef and salmon to cook for dinner. And as usual, our Master Chef aka Eve marinated the beef till it was so marvelious and the salmons were also very nicely pan fried by Louis…Yummy!! Terence and Cherry bought Otahs and Ice-Cream. Aces family contributed a Bread talk cake.

It was a relaxing and enjoyable dinner. We had Salad, beef, salmon, otahs and soup. Of course, not forgetting a bottle of good Red wine, dessert was cake with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

Both Anthea and Anders were busy watching VCD’s and playing with the toys in “nai nai’ house after their dinner. Also our little niece, Faith, was keeping the family members busy with her “talking and wanting to walk”. But being home based, it was more manageable with children and we get to spend quality time with Faith. It’s really hitting "4 birds with one stone".

I really had wonderful weekends of Food Galore and we are always blessed with good food and good companionship, which we will not take for granted.

Happy Mother's Day to all the 伟大 媽 媽 !!

Happy Mother's Day weekends...

Special Home cooked Dinner , Friday, 11 May

Yesterday when i fetched Anthea and Anders from childcare, the teachers passed their Mother's Day presents to me.

Anthea's Artwork

It was very sweet and knowing that it is handmade (with teacher's help) by the children, i was really touched.

Anders's Artwork.

Been another busy week, both at home and at work. So far, domestically we are doing quite well. It's not easy and at times, can be very tiring. But at the end of the day, the satisfaction and self-fulfilment just write-off everything.

Anthea has been on her best behaviour since Siti left and i am really glad she is listening to our instructions most of the times.

Anders is still not as well behaved as Anthea. He has been crying and whining alot to get things his way. Adrian even caned him this week when he did not listened to my instruction and created a mess in the kitchen. For a 3 years old, it is not easy, especially Siti has been giving in to him alot when she was looking after him.

So to understand his emotional needs better, i went to library to borrow some books, hopefully, i will be enlightened after reading.
This weekends we celebrate Mother's Day. Last night, i had requested to eat western at Lao ma's place. As usual, it was a very sumptious dinner, menu included Roast Beef, fried chicken wings, vegetables, mashed potatoes and soup. Lao pa made great western meal and he cooked very delicious Hainanese Chicken rice.

After dinner, we da-bao some food back home for adrian as he went for his usual badminton session at Bishan Sport complex.

Household chores routine , Saturday, 12 May

In the morning, i went market to get some ingredient to prepare for lunch. For today lunch, i managed to cook a nice soup - Black chicken with Black bean soup recommend by wokking mum. I steamed a fish (ngoh yu) and had spinach. Also, there was roast beef from yesterday dinner. Another simple and enjoyable home cooked meal.

As usual, i went around with my weekend chores - sweep and mop the house, washes the 2 bathrooms, do the laundry and prepared children lunch. Now time is fully utilised and sometime, i even asked myself "Time not enough"...hee : P

For tonight dinner, we are meeting our extended family to dine at Sze Chuan Court at Swissotel the Stamford. Looking forward to another nice chilling out session with the family.

"Antz..Antz"

Last night around 3 am, Anders suddenly woke up and cried "Antz..Antz".

I thought he was dreaming, so i woke up and sat beside him and checked his bedsheet. Then i hold him to stop his cryings. I felt that he was very "hot". Immediate reaction was to check his temperature - 38.8 Degrees. I was shocked because prior to sleeping, he was still playing with Anthea, no sigh of any sickness.

So i fed him with paracetemol and then sponged him. I dared not sleep a bit. The focus was to bring his temperature down. He was still talking to me while i sponged him. Then slowly the temperature went down to about 37.6 degrees.

This morning, after bringing Anthea to childcare, i broughts Anders to the doctor. He was diagonsed to have Tonsillitis and was given 2 days of MC. His medication consisted of Paracetemol and Antibiotics to 'kill' the bacteria . (I guessed we had been allowing him too much french fries which may had trigger the tonsil.)

After medication, his temperature reading is at 37 degrees. I am keeping my guard on because from past experienced, the temperature will be erratic, especially in the night.

So far his appetite and activity levels are normal. Hopefully with another day of good rest and medication. Anders can recover fully.

Sleeping Beauties

On Friday, i received an sms "mam, how are you? i miss anders. Siti".

It was from none other than our dearest maid, Siti. On Friday evening, we called her when we came home after dinner from 253.

Anthea and Anders were very happy to speak to her over the phone. They kept asking her 'where are you', 'what are you doing', etcs. Siti kept telling them that she missed them.. : )

I spoke with her and she mentioned that now they are planning the wedding date. It could be in mid June or early July. Wow...so fast to plan for a wedding in Indonesia. In Singapore, we usually do it 1 year in advance. So i told her once the date is confirmed, just sms me. We will try to attend her "BIG DAY" if chances permit.

Now that Sit had left, we had adjusted our sleeping rooms. Previously Siti will sleep in the "Pink" room with Anders and Anthea will sleep with Adrian and myself in "Blue room". As we had repaint the house, that how the new colors room come about.

The new sleeping arrangement is Anthea, Anders and myself will sleep in Pink room while daddy sleep in Blue room. This arrangement is good for me, especially in the morning so that i can finished the chores before the children wake up. I hope that slowly the children can sleep on their own in the Pink Room. It will take time but i think they will learn and grow up.

(Anthea & Anders in the Pink room)

Fruit of Labour Day

Labour Day is supposing to be a Public holiday.

Since my recent promotion, labour day means doing domestic labor work. I managed to sweep and mop the house, cooked lunch for children, do ironing and washed the family car.

As it rained, so I could not bring the children to the park as previously planned. They stayed home and watched children programs on Kids Central while I busied at work.

In the morning, I went to the wet market nearby and bought some ingredients to cook mee soup for lunch, as both of them wanted that for lunch.

Following some good recipe from Wokking mom’s blog, I managed to cook up a Prawn with slice pork noodles. I added fish balls as well since both Anthea and Anders love fish balls.

Both of them love the noodles and Althea even asked for extra helping. This really makes my effort worthwhile.

After lunch, they powered nap and in the late afternoon, they played at our neighbour’s house as there is an older schooling boy.

Another of our neighbour gave us a portion of Vinegar Pig’s Trotters. We had it for dinner. This aunty makes very delicious 猪腳醋. Adrian and I enjoyed it very much.

In the evening after dinner, I brought Anthea and Anders to AMK Mall. As the new bus interchange is functional, we took a bus from the bus stop near our block. The bus brought us right into the mall. Simply so efficient and the children love it. We went MacDonald’s for Sundae and cake, both of them kept telling me “mommy, we are enjoying life…” simple words but it meant so much.

After dessert, we went to NTUC Extra and bought their milk powder. Then we took a bus home.

Life will never be the same again with this new bus interchange.

CODE "RED"

Bad News…..

“CODE RED “- Aces family has been activated over the weekends.

On Thursday, Anthea’s school teacher called me and mentioned that one of her eye was swollen. They suspected she had been infected as there are about 4 of her classmates having the same problem at the same time.

Immediately, I took time off from work and brought her to the clinic. At 4 pm, most of the clinic was closed, so we waited till 6.30pm. Adrian brought her to the GP near our house.

He confirmed that she had conjunctivitis, also know as Red eye. GP also mentioned that it is very infectious.

Definition of Red eye
Red eye: Also called conjunctivitis. Redness or irritation of the conjunctivae, the membranes on the inner part of the eyelids and the membranes covering the whites of the eyes. These membranes react to a wide range of
bacteria, viruses, allergy-provoking agents, irritants and toxic agents. Viral and bacterial forms of conjunctivitis are common in childhood.

With this in mind, we tried our best to keep Anders at a distance. Anthea was given a day of Medical Leave. On Friday morning, I took her to my mom’s place for ½ day and took her home in the afternoon.

I made the WRONG MOVE….sigh!! My mom got the Virus on Saturday. Then my 2nd brother got it on Monday.

At home, Anders got it on Saturday and Adrian got it on Sunday. The virus didn’t stop here.

Yesterday, I heard my mother-in-law mentioned that my father-in-law also got it.

Feel so apologetic to the extended families for causing the inconvenience to them.

This kind of virus is very infectious and one must really make sure they don’t share or come in any contact with the person who got it.

So far, I am the only one, at home, who has been spared. I believe the main reason is I am taking care of the household chores, so I have been washing and washing my hands. This helps to reduce the chance of contacting the virus.

It is so scary, reminds me of SARS times. Really, don’t “play-play”.
